When a cold wind blows in from the sea and your walk along the promenade ends sooner than planned, nothing warms you up like a hot chocolate. You can get one in many places in Kołobrzeg, but it is genuinely good in only a few. Here are five cafés we recommend, with opening hours and a tip for the evening.

Domek Kata: chocolate in the Old Town until late

Domek Kata at Ratuszowa 1 is housed in a historic building right next to the town hall. It is the best choice for chocolate in the evening: Monday to Saturday from 11:00 to 23:00 and on Sunday from 10:00 to 22:00, all year. There are homemade cakes and desserts to go with it, and the coffee comes from the local Colbergcoffee roastery. It is child-friendly.

W Filiżance Café in the centre

W Filiżance Café at Narutowicza 11 is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday from 10:00. It is a comfortable place to linger over a chocolate: there is Wi-Fi, parking, and it is child-friendly. ★ 4.5 from over 1,200 reviews.

Colbergcoffee: chocolate and artisan bakes

At Colbergcoffee at Dubois 21A in the Old Town, order something from the artisan bakes with your hot chocolate, a cinnamon roll for example. The café is open all year, Monday to Thursday from 8:30 to 19:00, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 to 20:00 and Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00. It is rated ★ 4.9 from over two thousand reviews and welcomes dogs. Just remember it is a place for quiet conversation, without laptops.

Caffe Venezia in the spa district

Caffe Venezia at Sikorskiego 1/3 is open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. It is close by after a walk along the sea, has a garden and parking, welcomes dogs and is child-friendly. ★ 4.3 from nearly 1,900 reviews.

Jaremko Soli: chocolate with kids

Jaremko Soli at Sienkiewicza 17D in the Radzikowo neighbourhood has a play corner, so you can enjoy your chocolate in peace even with little ones. It is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 19:00, on Saturday from 8:00 to 21:00 and on Sunday from 9:00 to 19:00. There is parking by the door, and dogs are welcome.

How to tell a good hot chocolate

  • Real chocolate, not powder. A good hot chocolate is made from melted chocolate or good cocoa, not from a ready mix.
  • Thick but not floury. It should coat the spoon, not remind you of packet pudding.
  • The sweetness does not hide the cocoa. In a good chocolate you taste the cocoa, and the sugar only lifts it.
  • Hot, but not boiling. Overheated chocolate loses its aroma and turns bitter.

Where to go for chocolate in the evening

Domek Kata stays open longest, until 23:00, on Sunday until 22:00. W Filiżance Café and Caffe Venezia are open until 21:00, and so is Jaremko Soli on Saturdays. Colbergcoffee closes at 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
