October is the month when Kołobrzeg changes pace. The beach empties, some places in Grzybowo close until spring, and the day gets more than two hours shorter. In exchange, the cafés of the Old Town have a free table again at any hour. Below is what to expect from the weather and what is actually open.
October weather: 12 degrees by day on average
Thirty years of data, 1991–2020, give an average of 12.4°C by day and 7.9°C at night. The month changes a lot from start to finish, though. In the first ten days of October days average 14.3 degrees, in the middle ten 12.5, and in the last ten only 10.7. Nights fall from 9.3 to 6.7 degrees.
It rains on 12 days a month on average, about 60 mm in total. Warmer days do happen: at least 18 degrees about twice in October, and the record from those thirty years is 22.3°C, recorded on 13 October 2018. Frost is rare in Kołobrzeg in October, because the sea still holds warmth. The coldest night in that period reached -2.6°C, on 24 October 2003.
Sea temperature in October
The Baltic cools more slowly than the air. In October the water off Kołobrzeg averages about 13.4°C: 15.1 degrees at the start of the month, 13.5 in the middle and 11.8 in the last ten days. Too cold for most to swim, but on a walk along the shore the sea still keeps the air fairly mild, especially with the wind off the water.
Shorter days and the clock change on 25 October
On 1 October the sun sets at 18:34, and on 24 October already at 17:40. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, 25 October, the clocks go back to winter time, so on Sunday sunset falls at 16:38. At the end of the month, on 31 October, the sun sets at 16:25 and the day lasts 9 h 28 min, more than two hours less than at the start.
In practice, a sunset walk by the sea in the second half of the month needs to be planned for early afternoon, and coffee after dark starts before five.
What stays open after the season
In early October 77 venues from our database were open and three were temporarily closed after the season: Baskijka in the spa district, and Kawiarnia NO.54 and Kolorowa Cafe 2.0 in Grzybowo. Of the open venues, 66 work seven days a week.
We have four addresses confirmed as open all year, winter included: Colbergcoffee, Domek Kata, the revolving café in the Arka hotel and Widokówka. The full list is on the cafés open all year page, and we keep adding to it.
In Grzybowo, apart from the two closed places, PrawdziweKafe is still open daily from 10:00 to 19:00. On the west side of town Słodki Domek nad Morzem has cut its hours and now works from 10:30 to 18:00.
Morning coffee: from eight
At 9:00 on a Monday 27 venues are open, on Sunday 22. The earliest, at 8:00, are Jaremko Soli with breakfast all year, Captain's Mess and Dworcova. Café La Mer opens at 8:30 and Colbergcoffee at 8:45, at 9:00 on Sunday. More addresses are in the guide where to have breakfast in Kołobrzeg.
Evening coffee: plenty of choice after dark
At 20:00 you can order a coffee in 26 venues on a Monday and in 31 on a Saturday. The latest, until 23:00, are Domek Kata in the Old Town, until 22:00 on Sunday, Kawiarnia Wiatr i Woda and KoraLove Cafe. By the port, Bulwar Cafe is open until 21:30.
At Domek Kata the coffee comes from the local Colbergcoffee roastery and the cakes are homemade, which makes it a good address for an October evening, when it is already dark outside and dinner is still some way off. All the evening addresses are in the article where to get a coffee at 21:00.
Live weather
Averages tell you what to expect, but not whether it will rain tomorrow. Current conditions, IMGW station readings, the hourly and 16-day forecasts and the sea temperature are on the Kołobrzeg weather page. It also suggests whether it is a day for coffee in the garden or rather inside.
